Despite Sigiriya being a major local tourist attraction, facilities provided for locals have been poor.

The prevailing downpour has caused the national heritage site lose its local tourists as the parking lot reserved for them has become flooded with excrement-mixed water. Washrooms are overflowing, and the water flowing into the shops, has caused them to close down.

Residents said there was an unbearable stench for months, but the Dambulla Central Cultural Fund had not taken action to resolve the matter despite being informed by the Municipal Council. The washrooms are a major inconvenience to the sanitary needs of local tourists.

The public urge officials to take immediate action to resolve the matter by providing a new or common parking space for both local and foreign tourists.

A foreign tourist ticket to the site costs nearly 12,000 rupees while a local tourist is charged 120 rupees. The public question why the tourist funds along with the funds provided by the government to the Dambulla Central Cultural Fund cannot be used to resolve the matter. They said that the Municipal Council should  provide gully bowsers to extract the excrement-mixed water.
