The Inter-University Trade Union Federation (IUTUF) has announced that a final decision on future trade union action of university non-academic staff will be made after consultation with all union representatives.

State university non-academic staff went on a one-day token strike on Thursday (18), protesting the Government’s decision to increase only lecturers’ allowances.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s resolution to increase university lecturers’ 25% study allowance, which will be included in their January salary.

Trade unions connected to State universities objected to the Cabinet decision, citing that the non-academic staff members were offended by the lecturers’ pay increases.

The IUTUF added that services will continue as usual from Friday (19) and a final decision about upcoming trade union action would be made over the weekend.
