Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) faced an unexpected embarrassment when former South African cricketer and current fielding coach refuted claims made by SLC about engaging him for training its national cricketers and coaches.

A recent media release from SLC stated that the board had decided to seek the services of well-known international cricket talents to provide advanced training for local coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists through periodic training programmes. The SLC media release mentioned the names of former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, former India national team fast bowling coach Bharat Arun, and former Sri Lanka national team physiotherapist Alex Kountouri.

However, shortly after the announcement, Rhodes contradicted the claim in a social media post, catching SLC off-guard.

“It’s news to me,’ he said on X.

Rhodes, who is currently involved in league cricket, had previously completed a similar stint with SLC. Ashley de Silva, CEO of SLC, clarified the situation, stating that negotiations with Rhodes’ manager may not have been effectively communicated to Rhodes.

De Silva expressed confidence in securing Rhodes’ services in the future, emphasising that the intention is not to hire them permanently, but to enhance the knowledge and skills of players and coaches through occasional sessions when they are available.

The CEO also confirmed discussions with Arun, the former Indian fast bowler, who has agreed to provide his services after the IPL. Former Sri Lankan physiotherapist Alex Kountouri, currently with Cricket Australia, is assisting Sri Lanka in the recruitment process of physios, trainers, and masseurs.
