CINEC Pioneers LNG Training Programme to Meet Soaring Demand for Skilled Seafarers
View(s):In response to the surging demand for skilled personnel in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, the Faculty of Marine Engineering at CINEC has introduced a ground breaking training programme. This initiative aims to equip individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the expanding field of LNG-powered vessels, a critical component in meeting the stringent environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
LNG is increasingly recognized as a clean and practical transitional alternative fuel for the maritime industry, producing lower emissions and boasting qualities such as being odourless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive. As a result, the global demand for LNG-powered vessels has witnessed a remarkable 25% growth. However, the industry faces a pressing challenge – a worldwide shortage of trained technical personnel.
Mr Arjuna Ranasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering at CINEC, underscored the need for skilled seafarers in the LNG sector. Recognizing this demand, CINEC offers two Training Programmes covering theoretical and practical aspects essential for working on LNG-powered ships. This programme, officially named the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF) Training, is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. CINEC offers two comprehensive courses, including a 4-day IGF basic training with LNG simulator sessions and a 5-day IGF advanced training incorporating simulator training.
Mr Ranasinghe highlighted that only a few countries worldwide currently provide training that addresses the IMO LNG Training requirements for working on LNG-powered vessels. Presently, CINEC stands out as the sole institution in Sri Lanka offering such a specialized training programme. They have successfully trained approximately 150 seafarers, comprising officers and ratings, both domestic and international. The widespread demand for IGF training programmes at CINEC among foreign seafarers underscores the excellence and popularity of their LNG training courses. This heightened interest is particularly notable considering the limited availability of such programmes on a global scale.
The success of the IGF training at CINEC is evident as two existing LNG-powered ships have entire crews comprised of students from this programme. Mr Ranasinghe emphasized the programme’s success, attributing it to lectures with modern knowledge delivered by instructors who underwent specialized training abroad. The training facility is well-equipped with the latest technology, including even simulators, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
With the next intake scheduled for February 2024, the CINEC LNG Training Programme offers a promising avenue for individuals seeking to enter the maritime industry. As the demand for skilled crew members continues to outpace availability, this initiative provides a unique opportunity for aspiring seafarers to be at the forefront of this new and burgeoning field.
