English, ICT and vocational training to commence after A/L exam
View(s):The proposal to provide three month vocational, English and information technology training for students completing this year’s GCE (Advanced Level) exam will be implemented from next month, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told Timesonline.
An estimated 50,000 students are likely to benefit from the scheme, but more students could be accommodated for the programme, he said.
Soon after the exam is completed applications will be called from those interested in following the courses.
The Minister said courses will commence within two weeks of applications closing on February 10.
Principals of schools with A/L classes have been informed of the programme.
The classes will be conducted after school hours and the services of vocational training teachers will be utilised. Rs500 million has been allocated as salaries for these teachers.
He said the objective was to provide an opportunity for those who fail to qualify for university entrance to gain skills in a particular vocation so they could gain employment.
Vocational training would be available in several areas including motor mechanism, hotel industry, carpentry, electrical repairs etc.
“The applicants will be required to sit an examination, and according to marks obtained they would be able to select the course to follow,” he said.
If students fail to get entry after sitting the exam they could visit the closest Divisional Secretariat and make an appeal to find a suitable school to follow the course.
Cabinet approval for the project was granted. (DWI)
