Higher education sector development afoot: Minister
View(s):Many proposals to develop the country’s higher education sector have been discussed during the education reform process, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said.
By the beginning of next year, they will be put into effect.
The reforms include the appointment of commissions to oversee the regulation of vocational education facilities and State and non-State universities. The National Education Commission will conduct quality checks on these programmes. Draft bills have already been sent to the Cabinet.
Minister Premajayantha said that this year’s budget includes Rs 8,000 million for all research.
Many initiatives pertaining to the development of the higher education sector, which have been postponed for years, are about to come into effect, the Minister added.
He pointed out the collaboration between the Education Ministry, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and State universities to enhance academic research links with highly regarded universities across the world.
The minister stressed that students should spend a year less in school than they do now, which will allow them to complete their undergraduate and graduate degrees faster.
