Thirty First Anniversary Celebrations of ICLP and Awards Ceremony 2023
View(s):The Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP) is a Non-Governmental Organization established in the year 1992 with the objective of advancement of commercial law and the scholarship underpinning it. ICLP celebrated its 31st anniversary at the Annual Awards Ceremony held on the 19th January 2024 at the BCIS Olympus Auditorium.
Hon. Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. His Lordship in his keynote highlighted the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms as an effective means of resolving commercial disputes to overcome the delays and drawbacks in litigation. His Lordship further underscored the necessity of educating and raising awareness about such Alternative Dispute Resolution processes among legal professionals as well as the community in general.
Ninety eight students from various professional disciplines received diplomas and certificates in the Diploma in Commercial arbitration, Diploma in Shipping Law and Practice and the Certificate Course in Commercial Law. The ‘S.S. Wijeratne Award for the Best Student in Commercial Arbitration Course 2022/2023’ was won by Mr. G. Dinusha Maduranga and Ms K.N.D Fernando won the ‘S.S. Wijeratne Award for Best Student in Commercial Arbitration Course 2023’. The ‘U.L. Kadurugamuwa Award for the Best Student in ICLP-CCC Shipping Law and Practice Course’ was won by Ms Rosali Anandappa. All these programs were held on virtual platforms facilitating the participation of students joining from overseas. ICLP successfully delivered outreach programs on Arbitration and Construction Adjudication targeting the Gulf Region in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors’ fraternity in Oman and Qatar.
Due to the growing demand, ICLP is considering embarking on new ventures such as, an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Arbitration and a Course in Construction Adjudication and Construction Arbitration for Sri Lankan professionals residing overseas. The Diploma in Shipping Law and Practice is scheduled to commence on the 11th February offering special concessions for students and under graduates.
