The Galle Municipal Commissioner R. S. D. Rashnayake has been directed to immediately re-open 12 maternity clinics by withdrawing an ongoing court case.

The directive was given at the District Development Committee meeting held at the Galle Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat office by Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena.

Mr. Abeywardena had asked the reason for the closure of 12 maternity clinics built in Galle in 2019 at a cost of  Rs. 38 million.

Commissioner Ms Rashnayake responded that the Galle Municipal Council had filed a case in 2021, and therefore the clinics had been halted due to that.

The Municipal Council’s Chief Public Health Officer W. S. Liyanage explained that the court case was filed due to a dispute between the former Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Dr R. S. Bertram and Deputy Mayor of Galle Fows Niyaz over an issue about the Covid vaccination.

“As a result, 6 PHIs and all the midwives who worked under the CMOH had set up another office at Labuduwa following the incident without the approval of the Municipal Council,” he said.

The court case was filed to get the PHIs and midwives to work at the 12 maternity clinics run by the Galle Municipal Council, its legal officer explained. She added that until the court case is over, the maternity clinics could not be reopened.

Mr Abeywardena pointed out that pregnant women had to go to Labuduwa to obtain vaccinations, and are facing hardships. Therefore officials should resolve the matter.
