A string of accidents on the expressway including the death of an Austrian tourist, has prompted the Transport Ministry to look into strictly implementing traffic regulations on expressways.

The 37-year-old Austrian who was heading to the airport with his parents was killed on the Kadawatha-Kerawalapitiya outer circular road on Friday after the van they were travelling in rammed into a truck that had suddenly stalled due to a mechanical defect.
Police said that the van driver had failed to maintain proper distance.

Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that a meeting would be held tomorrow to discuss improving safety measures.
He emphasised that special attention should be given to strictly implementing traffic laws on expressways. This came as a reaction to six accidents that occurred on the expressways within the month of January.

He added that measures would be taken to not allow vehicles that are not roadworthy to enter the expressways.
The minister also said laws relating to speed limits, and drunk driving would be strictly implemented.
