Draws galore as Holy Family GS win girls’ hockey title

Holy Family Convent won the Girls' title

St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa and St. Thomas’ College, Matale ended up as joint champions of the Boy’s category of the All-Island Schools Under-18 Boys and Girls Hockey Tournament while Holy Family Girls’ School, Wennappuwa overcame Sri Sangamittha Balika Vidyalaya, Matale by 1-0 to annex the Girls’ category winners.

A total of 56 teams were in contention under three different categories as the Boys ‘A’ Division included 24 teams and its ‘B’ Division consisting of 11 teams. The Girls’ ‘A’ Division had 21 teams divided into four groups at the four-day competition held during the last week of December at the Albert F. Peiris Stadium in Wennappuwa.

While St. Joseph Vaz and St. Thomas’ ended up as joint champions of the Cup segment in the ‘A’ Division, following a goalless contest, Maris Stella College, Negombo and Zahira College, Matale too were engage in a similar situation in the Plate final, culminating as joint champions.

The Bowl final, between Christ Church College, Matale and Vidyartha College, Kandy also finished in scoreless, with both finalists being named as joint champions. The Shield final, between St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena and Kingswood College, Kandy, too ended in a scoreless draw, forcing the organisers to name both teams as joint champions.

Nadija Weerasuriya of St. Thomas’ College, Matale was adjudged the Best Player of ‘A’ Division, while F. Sadev of St. Joseph Vaz was named the Best Goalkeeper of this segment.

However, after a hotly contested final in the ‘B’ Division Boys segment, D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, overcame St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy by 2-1. The third place playoff between Tenna Maha Vidyalaya, Matale and Zahira College, Colombo ended in a scoreless draw, as both teams emerged joint champions.

The award for the Best Player of ‘B’ Division went to K.Z. Cuttilan of D. S. Senanayake College while Milan Jonathan of St. Sylvester’s College won the award for the Best Goalkeeper.

The Cup final of the Girls’ segment had a very well contested game, in which Holy Family Girls’ School, Wennappuwa beat Sri Sangamittha Balika Vidyalaya, Matale by 1-0. The Plate championship was shared by Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala, who were engaged in a goalless draw.

Musaeus College defeated Visakha Vidyalaya by 1-0 to claim the Bowl title, while Ovilikanda Maha Vidyalaya, Matale beat Southland College, Galle by 1-0 to win the Shield title of the competition. Sri Sangamittha, Matale was named the Best Goalkeeper among girls.
