President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to concentrate on the introduction of job-oriented courses to reduce the unemployment rate.

The President said that similar to the introduction of information technology courses for arts stream students with World Bank funding, there should be more courses introduced for students.

The president also said that more facilities would be introduced to students so they could purchase the computers they need for their studies. He said the introduction of a soft loan system was also being considered.

The instructions were given during a meeting the President had with UGC officials.

The President also said the courses should be affordable to students.

He said more funding was expected from international lending agencies for programmes to reduce unemployment rates.
