Alleged corruption by Weerawansa: AG submits 16 more documents as evidence
The prosecution has amended the indictment filed against National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa over his failure to explain assets acquired during the five years he was a minister.
The indictment has been amended by adding a further 16 documents to the evidence as court productions.
The Attorney General hopes to lead four of the new documents under the Evidence (Special Provisions) Ordinance (Computer Evidence), Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena, PC, informed the Colombo High Court.
The case against Mr. Weerawansa has been filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and is being heard before High Court Judge Nawaratne Marasinghe.
ASG Jinasena handed over copies of the new documents to be entered into as evidence to the court and the accused. The prosecution has already submitted to the accused a document containing 74 proposed issues.
The ASG informed the court that the accused needed to present facts on his stance regarding the proposed issues.
Mr. Weerawansa’s lawyers agreed to the request and sought time to respond to the documents submitted by the prosecution.
Judge Marasinghe accordingly postponed further hearings until March 1 and ordered Mr. Weerawansa to appear in court on that date.
President’s Counsel Shavindra Fernando appeared for Mr. Weerawansa.
