Consumers in soup over high and varying Vege prices
View(s):Spinning in a whirlpool of fluctuating vegetable prices, consumers are being forced to pay varying prices on a daily basis.
A notable price difference was seen in the past weeks where vegetables cost varied in prices, depending on the location. For instance, the retail price of a kilo of lime cost 140 rupees in Dambulla, 200 rupees in Pettah and 400 rupees in Narahenpita.
President of the trade association in Dambulla C. S. Siriwardene said that a retail kilo of carrots cost between 350 – 400 rupees at the Dambulla economic center, as there is a sufficient supply of vegetables.
However, the daily price report of the Central Bank stated that the price of carrots increased in the Dambulla market due to a limited supply from the Nuwara Eliya area.
Although prices have reduced relatively, consumers still find vegetable prices unbearable, causing a substantial drop in consumer demands.
Statistics revealed that the retail price of a kilo of carrot which was 2078 rupees a kilo went down to 780 rupees in the Dambulla market, 1100 in Pettah and 1200 in the Narahenpita market this week.
Meanwhile, farmers harvesting premature crops have resulted in consumers paying high prices for low quality produce.
