Non-functional traffic lights at crucial point adds to traffic woes in Kandy town

The government has apparently allocated Rs. 15 million for a multi-modal traffic hub to ease the traffic congestion in Kandy. However, the Sunday Times learns this would take more than three years, and in the meantime, day-to-day traffic problems only seem to get worse with little being done to ease the situation.
A case in point is the traffic lighting system in front of the landmark Queen’s Hotel in the heart of the city. The equipment was installed about three years ago but has never been operational.
This is a heavily congested point where traffic coming from D.S. Sennayake Mawatha turns off to areas such as Tennekumbura, Pallekelle, Hanguranketa, Ampara, Rikkilagaskada, Mahiyangana, and other main routes.
When we contacted the police about the non-functional traffic lights at this four-road junction, they said it was not their duty. The Kandy Municipality, too, said it was not their responsibility. The Transport Department said they would look into the matter.
Meanwhile, Kandy residents ask if they have to wait for the multi-modal traffic hub to take off to find answers to the ever-increasing traffic congestion in Kandy town.
