Pawra – Raids around schools net drugs and sellers
View(s):The Police have launched a programme to prevent the distribution of narcotics around schools under the programme ‘Pawra’ (Barrier), the Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon told Timesonline.
The move came after a survey carried out by Police intelligence units, the Criminal Investigations Department and Special Task Force revealed that 4,893 schools were vulnerable as there were persons selling drugs around schools.
A string of arrests have been carried out after the new school term commenced this week.
Over 500 persons have been arrested on allegations of trading drugs to school children or operating around schools. During the raids 85 kilograms of heroin, 48 grams of ICE (crystal methamphetamine), 1,561 narcotic pills, 1,285 contraband cigarettes, and 2 kilograms of cannabis were detected.
300 more schools have been identified as vulnerable.
Under the Pawra programme committees have been formed to get the assistance of teachers, parents and students. Some 400 schools have been identified as vulnerable for other vices including consumption of liquor around schools.
Directions have been given to the Senior Superintendent of Police in the respective areas to carry out raids around the schools.
Separate telephone numbers have been introduced to receive information.
The Acting IGP said they hoped to carry out the programmes around international schools and tuition classes as well. -DWI
