Moulding Filmmakers for tomorrow

A group comprising of young Sri Lankan and Pakistan filmmakers screened their film productions, a result of six months long cinematic collaboration, Film Talents Programme, ‘Voices from Sri Lanka and Pakistan’.
Organised by the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka the budding filmmakers Abdullah Khan and – Javaria Waseem from Pakistan and Chathura Fernando, Dinesh Balasri, Gopi Krishna, Narthanie Serasinghe, Fathima Shanaaz, Thamilini Sithiravadivel and Zeeshan Akram Jabeer representing various parts of Sri Lanka were guided by German Film Director Till Passow, and was supported by Sri Lankan filmmakers Vimukthi Jayasundara and Anomaa Rajakaruna, alongside German documentary filmmaker Cornelia Klaus.
Selected over 100 applications, the 9 emerging filmmakers had selected variety of subjects to present cinematically and had worked developing the script to final production. While some had tackled their extremely personal experiences specially related to war and ethnic issue, the others had showcased social, cultural, religious, political and more importantly economic crisis that the country going through.
Filmmaker Passow was happy working with the young filmmakers from Sri Lanka and Pakistan. ‘In the beginning of last year we called for applications and we had over 100 applicants from which we selected ten’ he said In July last year five themes that were relevant for Sri Lanka, Pakistan and international audience were selected and five workshops were held.
The project is coordinated by Yoshitha Perera, an award winning cinematographer and a journalist based in Colombo.
