Officials’ failure to respond delaying PSC investigations
View(s):The Public Service Commission (PSC) has raised concerns that the failure of officials to respond to queries raised by the Commission is delaying the process of completing investigations related to public sector employees.
The concerns were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) which met in Parliament under the Chairmanship of Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna. The sessions were held before Parliament was prorogued.
The main aim of the meeting was to examine the auditor’s report and the current performance of the Public Service Commission.
A key issue raised was that the Commission has a delay in completing inquiries. When responding to the complaints, there are difficulties faced by them due to being unable to directly contact the heads of the departments and the secretaries of the ministry.
The Committee was told that particularly in disciplinary action cases there were delays in sending responses.
“Despite sending reminders, officials delay in sending responses. The Commission has no powers to take action against the officials,” the Committee was told by an official.
During the meeting, the State Minister pointed out that the PSC was established to satisfy the public, while providing an efficient and disciplined service transparently.
Also, there are concerns about drawbacks within the organisational structure and work procedures.
