Police to get higher food and lodging allowance from Tuesday
View(s):All police personnel will receive an increase in their food and lodging allowance starting next Tuesday.
Accordingly, the police will initially be receiving the first phase of the increase for six months and, in the next six months, will receive a higher allowance with arrears for the first six months, Public Security Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunathilake told the Sunday Times.
He said that from constable to sergeant ranks, police would receive an increase between Rs 2,340 and Rs 4,230, while the sub-inspector and chief inspector ranks would receive an increase of Rs 3,060 and Rs 4,320. From the Assistant Superintendent of Police to the Inspector General of Police, the increase would be Rs 4,140.
Accordingly, the food and lodging allowance paid to police personnel would range from Rs 18,930 to Rs 25,140, with further increases due in six months to be paid with arrears.
The allowance increase was to take place last month but had been put off due to a delay in releasing Treasury funds. The Police Department has agreed that it would make the payments from its own funds until the Treasury released the funds, the official said.
Meanwhile, police officers who are deployed to control protests and drug raids and are attached to related intelligence services would be given a special allowance—one-fourth of their basic salaries—following Cabinet approval, according to the 2023 Police Progress Report.
However, police officers attached to the VIP security division for retired presidents, the Prime Minister’s Security Division, the Ministerial Security Division, the Special Task Force (STF), and the Intelligence Service have already been granted a special allowance amounting to one-third of their basic salary as well, according to the report.
Promotions were also granted to 8,381 officers who qualified during the first three quarters of last year. Among them, 4,587 were promoted from the rank of constable to sergeant.
Among the 2,297 police and STF personnel who had submitted papers for the vacation of their posts, 910 officers were qualified to be reinstated into the service after an interview. A recommendation was also sought by the police from the Public Service Commission to reinstate another 62 officers, according to the report.
There were no fresh recruitments made to the Sri Lanka Police from January to September last year.
