Stealing trees from Sigiriya

Wildlife Department officials have unearthed a racket where trees from the Sigiriya sanctuary were being uprooted and planted in a newly built hotel.
Trees were being uprooted and securely taken away in tractors to be planted where a new hotel is coming up in Gedigaswalana.
The trees known as ‘Bolpana’ are being sold at Rs 1,500 per tree.
Wildlife officials S S Milida, D M Nilantha and D B Dhanushka had been following those involved in the racket for several weeks and arrested two suspects.
The officials had later visited the hotel under consutruction and found that that several trees removed from the sanctuary had been planted here.
The suspects and the tractor detained are due to be produced in courts.
