A 14-year-old schoolboy was killed in a freak accident when a branch of a tree fell on him while he was walking on the road in the Norwood area last week.

Murugan Asanth was proceeding to the town for a haircut on February 3 and was passing a group of workers who were cutting a tree.
While the tree they were cutting fell on another tree, a branch fell on Murugan.

He was rushed to the Dickoya Hospital and thereafter to the Nawalapiitya Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The contractor and four others involved in cutting the tree were produced before the Magistrate Court in Hatton and remanded until February 12.
