Asian International School swimmers represent Sri Lanka at BIMSTEC 2024
View(s):Four outstanding students, who are renowned as top swimmers of Asian International School, namely Nikhileshwaran Kumaraguru, Christina Perumal, Sithuki Yonara and Vishalinie John, were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the BIMSTEC Youth Water Sports Meet 2024 held in India.
Christina Perumal secured the bronze medal in the 200m Breaststroke event overcoming fierce competition while Nikhileshwaran Kumaraguru and Sithuki Yonara were both placed fourth in their respective events. Nikhileshwaran completed the event as the fastest Under-20 Sri Lankan in the 50m Butterfly event.
Established in June 1997 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, commonly known as BIMSTEC, is a regional organisation comprising of seven member states which include Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Over 400 athletes and officials from the seven countries participate in this sports event which is intended to promote understanding and cooperation between countries. This is the first sports event organised by BIMSTEC.
Asian International School has been in the forefront in producing athletes of national repute for over two decades, notably in basketball, swimming and other watersports. The four outstanding swimmers, Nikhileshwaran, Christina, Sithuki and Vishalinie are the latest breed from Asian International School to make the school proud.
