Mayooran Kubherane, Seneshi Jayatinga, Mayank Vithanaarachchi and Christina Fernando emerged winners at the Carlton Club Junior Ranking Tennis Tournament 2024 held at the Carlton Tennis Club courts in Moratuwa from January 26 to 29.

Mayooran initially had a close fight against Bhishman Balaratnarajah in the Under-18 Boy’s Singles final, as the first set came to a close end, but he made amendments and snatched the second set to record a straight win. Mayooran beat Ashlin de Silva in straight sets in the semi-final, while in the other qualifier Bhishman had to struggle before settling to a 2-1 win to reach the final.

In the Under-18 Girls’ Singles final, Seneshi Jayatunga badly lost the first set against her opponent Yesali Jayakody, but the determined lanky lass made a strong comeback to secure a vital 2-1 win and claim the title. Seneshi had a comfortable passage in the semi-final against Olumi Munasinghe while in contrast Yesali had to face an initial scare as both finalists claimed 2-0 wins.

Mayank Vithanaarachchi easily overcame Ranuja Seneviratne in the Boy’s Under-14 Singles final, as the eventual winner recorded a comfortable 2-0 win to lift the title. He enjoyed a similar cruise in the semi-final against Nithushan Pulinath while Ranuja too experienced a similar encounter
against Anusara Pathiratne in
the second qualifier.

Christina Fernando was almost given a shocker by her opponent Savini Samaratunga, but the determined youngster staged a late comeback to record a 2-0 straight win and claim the Girls’ Under-14 Singles title. Christina perhaps carried forward the pressure from the challenge she encountered against Zakkiya Zihar in the semi-final, where the eventual winner had to suffer an early setback before securing a 2-1 win. Savini, on the other hand, experienced a similar challenge against Hasandi Jayasinghe, but she too was made to fight hard for her 2-1 win in the second semi-final.
