State lands to increase forex income
Sri Lanka will now lease out state lands to private entrepreneurs in a bid to generate increased income through agricultural exports.
The cabinet this week has stated that underutilised and unproductive state lands will be released held under the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB) and Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation (SLSPC) on lease to private entrepreneurs to cultivate export oriented crops or establish farms.
Non- Cabinet State Plantation and Enterprise Reform Ministry Secretary Dr. M.M. S.S. B. Yalegama said that this is being carried out as part of government policy to make optimal use of these types of lands and creating more jobs at the village level. He noted that when calling for proposals for leasing out these state lands they would be given to private entrepreneurs on the condition that they will incorporate it under the name of a company and therefore the contract will be signed with the said company. This will ensure sustainability of the business and thereby create more jobs for people in the area.
Dr. Yalegama also said that export oriented crops like tea, rubber, coconut, spices and any other produce would be promoted.
Lands with an extent of about 300-400 acres will be leased out for a period of 30-40 years depending on the crop, he said.
This will ensure the increased productivity of the lands and proposals will be called as and when the lands to be leased out are identified. The lands will be identified by a committee established in this regard that will be carried out next week.
