President Ranil Wickremesinghe has stressed the need for a new education system that is in line with international standards and capable of producing professionals qualified for the global market.

In order to prepare pupils for the workforce, he said, exam pressure must be reduced, and English and technology incorporated into the curriculum.

Initiatives to open additional universities of technology and vocational institutions are currently underway, he added.

President Wickremesinghe made these remarks at an event to provide free school textbooks and uniforms at St Anthony’s Balika Maha Vidyalaya in Kollupitiya, on Wednesday (14).

The initiative includes providing textbooks and uniforms to student monks and nuns across 10,126 schools and 822 pirivenas in the island.
