Higher Ed. to be expanded with foreign collaboration
View(s):State Minister of Higher Education Dr Suren Raghavan has emphasised the need to offer multiple degrees through State universities, based on insights by international education experts, with plans to enhance the educational landscape in Sri Lanka.
He said plans to open three foreign universities in the country were set in motion. Two of these universities are currently in the establishment stage, and the third is expected to become operational in May this year, he added. The Indian Institute of Technology is set to open in Kandy, while the other two universities will have branches affiliated with the USA and the UK; the signing of Memoranda of Understanding is anticipated.
Discussions are in progress to set up a new Higher Education Development Commission that incorporates the recommendations of the University Grants Commission Committee Report and the Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe Committee, Dr Raghavan added.
The committee will be led by former Chief Justice K Sripavan, who will address the pertinent legal framework to bring the proposal before Parliament.
The Australian Higher Education Minister, Chancellors of University of Melbourne and University of Sydney, and 10 other universities are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka to discuss the educational context and the way forward.
Dr Raghavan emphasised the need for regulation in the private higher education sector, stating that there are no plans for commercialising education. (NA)
