Activist asks Acting IGP to investigate harassment incident
View(s):The Police have agreed to carry out a fresh inquiry into the alleged harassment incident where an activist was harassed in Jaffna while he was carrying out an event to advocate peace among communities.
Activist Deeman Ananda, who claims that he was harassed by Police, called for a fair investigation on the incident. He met and informed the Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon of the incident on Friday. He requested an investigation and action against persons who are responsible.
Acting IGP Tennakoon had told him that he would send a letter to the relevant Police Station via email instructing the Officers to carry out an investigation on the incident.
Mr Tennakoon had also asked Mr Ananda to go to Jaffna and give a statement to the Police. However, Mr Ananda expressed fear of returning to Jaffna as his security would be at risk.
Mr Ananda has written to the National Police Commission as well as the IGP about the incident.
He explained that when he went to Jaffna to organise an event to advocate peace he took lodging at Nagavihara The incident occurred when a team of Police officers had come and told him that he cannot stay at the temple.
