Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage plans to open Piduruthalagala to foreigners and locals. The mountain, the highest in the island, is of scenic beauty and can be trekked up and has vehicle access.
The Governor made these observations at the Nuwara Eliya Coordinating Committee held at the Nuwara Eliya auditorium, chaired by Parliamentarian S B Dissanayke, which has been reported from Nuwara Eliya.
The name Piduruthalagala , it is said, comes from when the peak is dry and it looks like straw. At times it is full of flowers and of scenic splendour.
But there is a snag; it is a High Security Zone, with all the State radar and communications equipment at the top of this highest mountain at 8,281 feet or 2,524 metres.
There was a ‘Pedro’ camp for scouts as well over the years. As scouts, we climbed the peak with Scout Masters like Samarajeewa, Leonidas James and Anton Blacker.
The British took their wives’ up this peak in sedan chairs carried by the workers of the estates.
