Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha announced the launch of a pilot programme for digital education, which is set to begin in March. Microsoft will provide assistance for teacher training, he said.

Minister Premajayantha made these comments during a press briefing to announce developments in the education sector, held at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC) this week.

He added that the distribution of school textbooks for 2024 was in progress, and that all textbooks have been sent to distribution centres, guaranteeing coverage. Distribution to schools is to be completed by March 1. A total of Rs 12,000 million has been set aside for this purpose.

Additionally, cooperation with the Chinese Government has made it possible to obtain 80 percent of the fabric needed for schoolchildren’s uniforms, for a total of Rs 5 billion. The distribution of these materials is presently underway, with the remaining 20 percent expected to arrive soon.

Preparation of term notes and school schedules for the new academic year is also awaiting completion.

The GCE Advanced Level (A/L) Examination will take place in December as planned, Minister Premajayantha confirmed.

In order to ensure a seamless implementation, schools will receive a circular with comprehensive instructions regarding the said activities over the next two to three weeks.

Beginning this week, efforts are progressing to involve parents in class meetings in an attempt to raise awareness and provide guidance centering on road safety, drug prevention, and safeguard children against any form of abuse.

Technology and career guidance programmes at 300 locations in all corners of the country will begin soon, coinciding with the release of A/L exam results.

Concerns regarding children missing school have been expressed by many. Health Ministry data shows a 0.17 percent drop in school enrollment as a result of a dip in the birth rate. -NA
