The CfPS Law School Holds Yet Another Successful Graduation At The BMICH
View(s):Proessor Mary Stiasny Pro Vice- Chancellor (International) and Chief Executive of the University of London Worldwide, chaired the graduation ceremony of the CfPS Law School and University of London Laws Programme. 72 graduates and diplomates of the University of London were conferred their degrees and diplomas by Prof. Stiasny.
Joining the Chief Guest Prof. Deepika Udagama, Chair Professor of Law and former head of the Department of Law of the University of Peradeniya on the stage were; Prof. Stiasny, Ms. Patricia Mckeller, Dean of Undergraduate Laws; University of London, Mr. Saliya Pieris President’s Counsel; Chairman of CfPS Law School and the Board of Directors including Mr. Sapumal Bandara, Attorney-at-Law and Mrs. Manouri Pieris, Attorney-at-Law the Joint Managing Directors and the members of the Teaching Faculty.
Prof. Stiasny stressed on the high quality of the University of London academic programmes and their global recognition.
The Chairman of the CfPS Law School, Saliya Pieris, President’s Counsel, stressed the need for commitment and diligence on the part of the new graduates in pursuing their chosen career. He also commended the graduates for the determination and resilience they have shown in the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and economic crisis.
Students who achieved distinctions for subjects in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of study were also awarded certificates at this ceremony. Nine students received awards for Public Law, European Union Law, Criminology, Equity and Trusts, Jurisprudence and Legal Theory, Public International Law.
Miss. Piumi Wattuhewa received a Certificates of Excellence for Public International Law from the University of London for being among the top three students in the world for that subject.
In addition to the above award Miss. Wattuhewa received distinctions for Criminology and Jurisprudence and Legal Theory. In total she received distinctions for three subjects in her final year of study. Miss Wattuhewa was a scholarship holder of CfPS and has demonstrated exceptional aptitude.
Nine graduates who demonstrated excellence in academic achievement in the University of London LL.B. programme were presented with medals by Prof. Deepika Udagama.
This year’s valedictorian Miss. Wattuhewa thanked the academic and non-academic staff of CfPS for putting great effort to give the best education to students in an unprecedented time.
A notable highlight of the ceremony was the standing ovation given to the new graduates and diplomates by the audience which deeply touched those in attendance.
The CfPS Law School is a Registered Centre of the University of London for its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Certificate of Higher Education in the Common Law Programmes. The University of London Laws Programme is backed by a consortium of the lead Colleges of the University of London, which are ranked among the top Universities in the World. These are the London School of Economics (LSE), University College of London (UCL), King’s College London, Birkbeck, SOAS and Queen Mary.
The University of London has always maintained rigorous standards in its awards. All examination papers are marked in London and graded by the examiners of the University itself.
Students are enrolled to CfPS in March and August each year. Students who are enrolled in March will be introduced in addition to a Laws Skills & Introduction to Laws programme designed to enhance and develop their writing and analytical skills which are essential in the study of the law.
Law Students are able to participate in debates and moots organised by the CfPS Law School Debating and Mooting Society. Another innovative feature is the Internship Programme which enabled students who complete their Second Year and Final Year to gain work experience in the Chambers and Offices of Senior Counsel and Attorneys-at-Law. Students are also taken on Court visits and on visits to Parliament.
CfPS Law School has a vibrant student body fostering a rich student experience . The office bearers to the Student Council are elected through an election each year. An annual sports event, talent show, end of the year party, fresher’s night and quiz competitions were among some of the events organised by the student council.
The new intake commences in March 2024.
