International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was marked on February 21. Every year since 2000, UNESCO and its member states have been observing IMLD globally. Bangladesh’s unique history in upholding the mother language and its commitment to linguistic diversity and multi-culturalism were instrumental behind this recognition.

The Bangladesh High Commission has been observing IMLD in Colombo every year since 2015. This year it was held in partnership with the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka; United Nations, Sri Lanka; and Sri Lanka Scout Association, involving local school children. The day’s programme included awards presentations to winners of children’s creative art and writing competition, cultural performances, and deliberations by dignitaries.
