Heavy load on children: Steps to reduce weight of school bags
View(s):The Education Ministry has announced measures to mitigate the health risks that hefty textbooks and school bags pose to children.
Carrying heavy school bags has been linked to spinal damage, the Health Ministry has pointed out.
To lessen the weight of school bags, plans have been made to print selected school textbooks in batches.
Additionally, steps have been taken to add all textbooks to the Education Publications Department’s website ensuring that schoolchildren can download and utilise the soft copy of the required books.
Measures will be taken at schools to securely store students’ textbooks in their learning spaces so they would not need to carry them around.
Meanwhile, the MoE suggests that teachers permit their pupils to use their textbooks collaboratively with their classmates, as this will contribute to the development of soft skills, social skills, leadership, and teamwork.
Given the present economic context, teachers have also been instructed not to put additional stress on parents and students by having them utilise multiple exercise books for various sections of the same subject.
School officials are advised to educate children and parents on selection and use of suitable school bags to prevent health risks.
According to the MoE, school principals have also been instructed to make sure that students only bring the required textbooks to class in addition to their workbooks. (NA)
