JICA, J’Pura Uni collaborate on trash management
View(s):The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is helping address Sri Lanka’s challenges with plastic trash management.
JICA collaborated with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s Faculty of Applied Sciences, which has a Polymer Science department providing insight into the nation’s existing plastic waste management situation.
JICA carried out a survey as part of its ‘Project for Strengthening Plastic Management Capacity’ of which main conclusions show that plastic trash accounts for 10 percent of the waste that local governments collect, with packaging plastics like single-use plastics (SUP) making up a sizable share of this waste.
In spite of the fact that there are 49 recycling facilities across the country that can collectively process 152 tons of plastic waste every day, the present rate of recycling stands at 100 tons per day. Professors and students showed interest in the insights on plastic management during lectures given by JICA officials and specialists.
JICA acknowledged the need for a multi-stakeholder strategy encompassing academia, government, and business, and placed a strong emphasis on proactive discussions aimed at developing practical solutions to Sri Lanka’s plastic waste problem. (NA)
