A ceremony was held at Maha Maluwa in Kandy on Friday morning with the participation of the two Maha Vihares to commemorate a brave Buddhist monk’s attempt to haul down the British Ensign before the Kandyan Convention was read out.

The ceremony marked the 209th anniversary of the event and commemorated the then Annunayake of the Asgiri Maha Viharaya, Venerable Wariypola Sumangala Thera, who warned the British military forces not to fly the British Standard. He was the serving monk in the inner shrine room of Sri Dalada Maligawa. He is said to have resisted the British soldiers’ attempt to fly the British Standard before the convention was read at the Audience Hall, or Magul Maduwa, on March 2, 1815.

The Anunayake of Asgiri Maha Viharaya, Venerable Panditha Anamaduwa Dhmmadassi Thera, said Ven Wariyapola Sumangala Thera had once spirited away the Sacred Tooth Relic to the jungles of Dambulla after the fall of the Kandyan kingdom, the last bastion of the Sinhala race.

This commemoration event was organised by the Diyawadana Nilame, Pradep Nilanga Dela.

The two Maha Vihares were led by the Asgiri Anunayake Rajakeya Panditha Niyangoda Vabitha Thera, and Malwattu Maha Vihare’s Venerable Panditha Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera.

The guest of honour was Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage.
