Gateway College, Colombo was unmatched in the Inter-International Schools Under-20 Girls Netball Championship, organised by Ilma International School, as they beat their counterparts from Kandy to emerge champions.
Gateway Colombo beat much fancied Ilma International in the semi-final to enter the final and beat Gateway Kandy at an all-Gateway affair. To the Colombo team’s credit, most matches were won with considerable margins. Gateway Kandy too fought hard to reach the final.
Gateway Kandy, opened the tournament with a sweet victory over the defending champions Lyceum International School, Wattala. Thereafter, they had a challenging quarter-final against Horizon College.
At the final, Gateway Colombo beat Gateway Kandy 25-6.
In the semi-final, Gateway Colombo beat Ilma 15-10 after beating Colombo International School 24-1, Lyceum International School, Ratnapura 31- 1 and OKI International School 27-1 at the group stage. At the quarter-final, Gateway Colombo beat St. Nicholas’ International School 19-0.
Gateway Colombo’s captain Methuli Erahapola won the ‘Best Defensive Player’ award and also was chosen as the ‘Netball Queen’ of the tournament while Gateway’s Mayumi Liyanage won the ‘Best Shooter’ award.
