Top guns reach Cup quarters at Zahira Centenary 7s
St. Peter’s, Isipathana, St. Joseph’s, Wesley, Zahira, Royal, DSS, and S. Thomas’ turned out brilliantly in their group stage games to qualify for the Cup quarterfinals after the first day of the Zahira College Centenary Rugby 7s at the Racecourse ground in Colombo yesterday.
After the league matches of the two-day competition with international flavour, Isipathana, St. Peter’s, Royal, and hosts Zahira ended their group stage campaigns with unbeaten records, after winning all three matches they played.
St. Peter’s had the honour of scoring the highest points on the first day with a runaway 52-0 win against Mahanama in the last match of the day. The four teams, along with Wesley, D.S. Senanayake, S. Thomas’, and St. Joseph’s, have secured a spot in the Cup quarterfinals scheduled to be played today. The most notable and surprising outcomes were faced by the Trinity side, who lost two of their three matches in the league to Wesley and D.S. Senanayake.
The Cup quarterfinals, scheduled to begin at 8.20a.m. today, will feature Zahira vs. Wesley, Royal vs. Isipathana, DSS vs. S. Thomas’, and traditional rivals St. Peter’s vs. St. Joseph’s. The Bowl semi-finals are set to commence at 10.40a.m. with Dharmaraja facing hometown rivals Trinity and Kingswood battling Lumbini. The Shield semi-finals, scheduled to begin at 11:40a.m., are of St. Aloysius vs. Maliyadeva and Sri Sumangala vs. Mahanama.
