The ZeroPlastic Movement stands as Sri Lanka’s preeminent environmental youth organization, boasting a formidable force of over 10,000 dedicated volunteers hailing from Sri Lankan universities. Renowned for its tireless commitment to combating     plastic pollution and fostering sustainable practices, this award-winning movement has emerged as a beacon of hope in the country’s environmental landscape. With its expansive reach and unwavering dedication, the ZeroPlastic Movement exemplifies the power of grassroots activism, empowering the youth to drive meaningful change and champion a cleaner, greener future for Sri Lanka and beyond.

In a resounding display of environmental stewardship, the ZeroPlastic Movement orchestrated a monumental clean-up initiative with the esteemed presence of actress Georgie Fisher, best known for her role in the enchanting SpellBinder series. The event,  held in Mount Lavinia Beach on 3rd of March, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against plastic pollution and climate change. This project was executed by the ZeroPlastic Community of Open University of Sri Lanka under the supervision of ZeroPlastic Movement. Project chairs are Tharinduni Peramuna (president of the ZPOUSL), Shehan Kaushalya(Vice president of the ZPOUSL and Dilrukshi Melisa (secretary of the ZPOUSL).

Against the backdrop of mounting environmental concerns, the ZeroPlastic Movement has emerged as an outstanding volunteer organization who won National Winner award in 2023 and prestigious Energy Globe World Awards, galvanizing communities not only in Sri Lanka but also worldwide to combat the pervasive threat of plastic waste. The organization’s latest endeavour saw volunteers from all walks of life converge to restore the natural beauty of the coastal areas while sending a powerful message of collective responsibility.

Georgie’s participation served to amplify the urgency of the cause, leveraging her influence to ignite public discourse and inspire tangible action. With unwavering commitment, she rolled up her sleeves alongside dedicated activists and local residents, embodying the spirit of grassroots activism at its finest.

“I am deeply honoured to stand alongside the ZeroPlastic Movement in this vital endeavour,” Georgie remarked, her voice resonating with conviction. “The imperative to safeguard our planet transcends boundaries of fame or fortune. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to take meaningful steps towards a sustainable future.”

The clean-up effort itself was nothing short of remarkable, with volunteers meticulously scouring shorelines, parks, and streets to rid the environment of discarded plastics. From plastic bottles to single-use straws, the sheer volume of waste collected underscored the magnitude of the challenge ahead. Nevertheless, spirits remained high as participants worked tirelessly, buoyed by a shared sense of purpose and determination.

“This event is a testament to the power of collective action,” remarked Mr.Nishshanka De Silva, founder of the ZeroPlastic Movement. “By coming together as a community, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to preserving our planet for future generations. With Georgie’s support, we are confident that our message will resonate far and wide, sparking a ripple effect of positive change.”

With the reverberations of the clean-up echoing far beyond Mount Lavinia, the ZeroPlastic Movement and Georgie have set a powerful precedent for environmental advocacy. Their collective endeavour serves as a poignant reminder that the fight against plastic pollution is not merely a battle for the present, but a legacy to be safeguarded for generations to come.
