Peace Corps volunteers continue work as English language instructors
View(s):The Education Ministry plans to enhance the English language proficiency of children starting in the primary grades, Education Minister Dr Susil Premjayantha said.
The MoE last year introduced a programme to practice oral English-based activities for primary grades. 14,000 instructors received training last year, and more will be trained.
From next year, the Grade 3 syllabus will also be updated in English, the Minister said at the inauguration ceremony for the 25th group of Peace Corps volunteers to serve in Sri Lanka, on Wednesday (6) at the BMICH.
For the next two years, 20 Peace Corps volunteers will be sworn in and work as English language instructors in schools in the Central and Uva Provinces.
Minister Premajayantha said that more Peace Corps volunteers are expected to visit Sri Lanka in the coming months to enhance the English language skills of the school community.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung emphasised the importance of these volunteers in strengthening cross-cultural ties and promoting English language education for Sri Lanka’s global economic participation.
This group of Peace Corps Volunteers arrived in Sri Lanka in November 2023 to commence a 12-week programme that includes instruction in the local language as well as cultural and productive participation in Sri Lankan schools. -NA
