Two performances of renowned dramatist Rajitha Dissanayake’s play ‘Weeraya Merila’ (The Hero is Dead) will be staged on March 17, Sunday at 3.30pm and 7.00pm at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

‘Weeraya Merila’ which premiered in 2002 has drawn crowds and critical acclaim in performances in Colombo and around the country. It won 5 State Drama awards including Best Original Play and Best Script.

As the title signifies, the play is themed on the absence of genuine heroes in contemporary society. The script was written at a time when the idea of the selfless classic “hero” who resisted and questioned mainstream social and cultural norms, was fast diminishing and being replaced by a new type of “hero” driven primarily by fame and self-interest. However, 22 years on, the play seems less of a work of futuristic fiction and more a commentary on contemporary society.

The cast comprises Dharmapriya Dias, Pasan Ranaweera, Sarath Karunarathna, Anuradha Mallawarachchi, Prasad Sooriyarachchi, Sudarshana Krishantha, Jenat Anthony, Kasuni Ganewaththa, Ashan Perera and Nawanjana Jayasekara.
