Central Province Governor Lalith U Gamage plans to establish a “Seven Virgins Range” tourist attraction at Maskeliya where the tragic “Martin Air” passenger aircraft disaster took place in 1974 killing 191 passengers and 9 crew members.

Last week, the Governor and Indonesia Ambassador Dewi Gustina Tobing visited the renovated memorial to attract tourists from Indonesia and other countries. The memorial is set against the backdrop of the mountain range. Known locally as “Saptha Kanya”, the range can be climbed by the adventurous.

The plane was hired by a major airline to carry pilgrims to Jeddah. A tyre from the ill-fated Martin Air flight can be seen near the Maskeliya Police Station.

According to ASP Hatton S. B. Senaratne who went to the scene of the accident, he nor other Police Officers could get near the estate where the plane crashed, as it was on fire due to the high octane fuel tanks that exploded.
