Seven-member national commission for women’s protection rights
View(s):A National Commission on Women is to be set up to ensure the rights of women and protect women from discrimination based on gender and violence against them, according to a new bill.
The bill published by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as subject Minister of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, seeks to establish principles of gender equality across various sectors by formulating the national policy for the advancement and empowerment of women.
Accordingly, a seven-member commission is to be constituted, of which a minimum of five members should be women. All members should be appointed by the President following recommendations from the Constitutional Council and the Women Caucus of Parliament.
The commission will be vested with powers to inquire into and investigate the infringement or imminent infringement of women’s rights and receive complaints from the public. In addition, the commission can also intervene in any proceedings relating to the infringement or imminent infringement of women’s rights, pending before any court with the permission of such court, according to the bill.
The powerful body can also request or call for any information or reports from any person for the purpose of performing any function vested in the commission to inquire into and investigate complaints with a view to ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Constitution relating to women’s rights and to promoting respect for and observance of women’s rights.”
