Eye care camp for Welikada prison inmates
View(s):The Prison Hospital Welikada conducted a health camp for cataract surgery for the third time on February 23 at the hospital premises, to ensure the well-being of inmates.
Surgeries were conducted by consultant eye surgeon, Dr M D S Gunathilaka and the National Eye Hospital medical team. The team conducts monthly clinics at the Prison Hospital.

This was the idea of medical-officer-in-charge of Welikada Prison Hospital, consultant eye surgeon Dr Gayani Tiskumara, and the medical staff of the hospital. Lenses and other medical items were donated by V Sarveshwaran.
The health camp was organised in collaboration with Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, Director General Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena, and Director National Eye Hospital Dr A R M Thowfeek.
Other commissioners, Dr Sudath Dharmarathna, Dr Hemantha Ranasinghe, Dr Monika Wijerathna, and other prison and healthcare professionals participated.
Inmate feedback regarding the health camp was positive.
