Allegations against Pastor Jerome: SC directs AG to submit report on probes’ progress
View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
The Supreme Court this week directed the Attorney General to submit a report on May 13 on the progress of the investigations into alleged money laundering and defamation of Buddhism by pastor Jerome Fernando.
The directive was given when two separate Fundamental Rights cases related to the pastor were taken up. One of them has been filed by the pastor, while the other has been filed by clergy against him.
The petitions were taken up by a bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and justices Murudhu Fernando and Gamini Amarasekara.
Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena, PC, told the court that the CID had failed to carry out a formal investigation and that the silence of the police was questionable.
In response, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris said the investigations were in progress and that details had been reported to the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate’s courts regarding the money laundering allegations, while investigations regarding the pastor’s statement allegedly defaming Buddhism had been completed.
He said, however, that due to a defect in the voice detection device, there had been a delay in the particular report, and, as a result, the CID had not been able to submit the extracts to the AG’s Department.
