The holy fasting month of Ramadan marked by Muslims commenced this week with the sighting of the crescent moon.

The sacred month, marks a period of religious reflection.

Several religious events were held in mosques across the country marking the event.

The Muslims who were fasting during the day broke their fast (ifhtar) at sunset. One such event was held on Friday at the Dawatagaha mosque, in Colombo.

Muslims gathered inside the mosque and had porridge and samosas and broke fast together.

The military conducted programmes to distribute dates in support of those who are fasting.

Security Force Headquarters (SFHQ) – Central distributed dates to the Haputale and Kahagolla Jummah Masjids.

SFHQ-Central, in collaboration with a patron, coordinated the delivery of the required stock of dates. Each masjid was given 20kg of dates.

SFHQ Commander Major General S R B Aluvihare and senior officers oversaw the handover of dates.
