Multi-faith funeral service in Ottawa today for murdered family
View(s):The father and brother of the sole survivor of the Ottawa mass murder, Danushka Maduranga Wickramasinghe, have travelled to Canada to take part in the funeral of the victims held today.
The victims, 35-year-old Dharshani Ekanayake and her four children aged 7, 4, 2 years and two-months-old, were killed along with a 40-year-old family friend.
A multi-faith funeral service is to be provided for the victims during the funeral ceremony held at the community centre in Ottawa.
Meanwhile, the father of Dharshani, B. G. W. Ekanayake told the Sunday Times that they gave an almsgiving at their residence in Polgahawela last week. The almsgiving was given to 35 Buddhist monks to mark each year of their deceased daughter’s life.
Mr. Ekanayake said they decided to allow the funeral of their daughter and grandchildren to be held in Canada and the bodies to be laid to rest there. “The bodies should remain in Canada, it would help the investigation and aid to bring justice to them. Anyway, there is no point in bringing five sealed coffins to Sri Lanka, it would worsen our pain,” he pointed out.
Foreign media reported that Febrio De Zoysa who was charged with 6 counts of first degree murder and 1 count of attempted murder was held in protective custody.
The 19-year-old had a brief court appearance via phone when the matter was taken up in court Thursday.
Canadian media quoted lawyer Ewan Lyttle who appears on behalf of De Zoysa as saying: “I can comment that he’s in protective custody.”
The case was adjourned until March 28, to give the lawyer time to receive and begin reviewing disclosure from the Crown. A lengthy process which would span months according to him.
