Pallansena Correctional Centre supplies coir mats to prisons

The inmates of Pallansena Correctional Centre for Youth Offenders netted in a revenue of nearly Rs. 1.5 million last year by supplying coir mats to the prison sector.
Assistant Prison Superintendent H.M Subash Nilanga Upuldeniya said the prisons that obtain coir from the correction centre also make four times their revenue.
He said the Pallansena correction centre maintains a coconut cultivation that yields a harvest every two months.
He said that from one harvest, over 5000 coconuts would be collected and used for consumption, and the coconut husks would be used to make coir.
The Assistant Prison superintendent said that they also sell coco peat as fertiliser, a byproduct of the coir-making process.
The only choir mill belonging to the Prions Department is also situated in the Palannsena Correction Centre, and it produces large quantities of coir carpets and thick ropes.
They could even sell a tipper of coco peat for Rs 11,000 if an order comes their way, he said, adding that they would however, follow a tender process.
