Two walkways in Wattala situated on either side of the Kalu Ela have been left without any maintenance.

One of the two walking tracks which were once frequented by health-conscious people is deserted, overgrown with weeds, and has become a dumping grown for garbage. Crocodiles from the canal use it as a basking spot.

The walking path which is under the purview of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC) is now neglected.

It has had its share of controversy in the past; once broken up by former Minister of Public Order and Christian Affairs John Amaratunge.

A lion statue has been stolen and solar panel light posts on either side of the paths do not function.

Most people who used the path in the past don’t do so anymore as the tracks are not maintained and safety is not assured. They propose the government hand over management to an institute.
