The Shi-en Ikebana and Floral Art Society of Sri Lanka is familiar to all lovers of floral artistry for their spectacular flower exhibitions, always done for a worthy cause. Last week, the Japanese ambassador awarded one of the society’s outstanding floral artists a special honour for her decades of dedicated work to popularise Ikebana in this country.

On March 12, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki, conferred the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” on Shiromi Soosaipillai, President of Ikebana International Sri Lanka Chapter 262, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of Japanese Ikebana culture in Sri Lanka.

“The Order of the Rising Sun” is awarded by the Emperor of Japan to foreign nationals who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of friendly relations with Japan.

It was back in 1983 that Shiromi began trying her hand at Ikebana with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Sri Lanka. Her growing passion for the art was something she actively pursued, following training courses in Singapore and participating in many exhibitions in other countries.

In 2001, she joined the Shi-en Ikebana and Floral Art Society of Sri Lanka, where she has over the years held various positions, including President. In 2007, she was instrumental in forming the Ikebana International Sri Lanka Chapter 262 along with other members of the Shi-en Ikebana and Floral Art Society of Sri Lanka.

At an elegant ceremony held at the Japanese ambassador’s residence, the Ambassador in his speech praised Shiromi for her tireless efforts in promoting the Japanese Ikebana culture in Sri Lanka and for teaching the spirit and techniques of Ikebana to the people of Sri Lanka for more than a decade, thus raising the standard of Ikebana skills in the country. Her commitment extends beyond the country’s borders as she actively participates in international Ikebana conferences and showcases her work through exhibitions and demonstrations around the world, the Ambassador pointed out.

A beautiful Ikebana arrangement done by Shiromi, who has in the past created many displays for special occasions like the Emperor’s birthday for the embassy was highlighted during the ceremony.
