Galle recorded a crushing 10-wicket win over Kandy with a day and a half to spare in the 4-day National Super League tournament encounter concluded at the Sooriyawewa Stadium yesterday.

Entering the field on to the third day with a commanding lead from the first innings, Galle aimed for their third outright win, a feat they accomplished effortlessly. Despite Kandy’s efforts to revive their second innings, with only the overnight pair of Kamil Mishara and Ahan Wickramasinghe showing resilience, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled, managing a mere 144 runs before being dismissed in just 21 overs.

Facing a target of 107 runs for victory, Galle’s openers, Sangeeth Cooray and Oshada Fernando, both notched identical unbeaten scores of 51, steering their team to yet another outright win.

This clash marked a showdown between the top two teams in the points table, with Galle now solidifying their position at the summit with 68.455 points, leaving Kandy trailing at 52.965.

Meanwhile, at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Jaffna and Colombo engaged in a fiercely contested high-scoring battle against Jaffna. In response to Jaffna’s imposing total of 491, Colombo, starting from an overnight score of 103 for 1, mounted a strong response, reaching 440 for 4 by the end of day three.

This remarkable performance was fueled by an unbeaten career-best knock of 172 by Nuwanidu Fernando, who faced 272 balls, smashing 13 boundaries and two sixes. Supportive half-centuries from Nipun Dhananjaya and Dasun Shanaka further bolstered Colombo’s innings. This match ends today.
