S. Thomas’ regain Mustangs Trophy
Half tons by Sadev Soysa and Thisen Eheliyagoda laid the foundation for S. Thomas’ College’s 30-run win over traditional rivals Royal College in the annual 47th Mustangs Trophy limited over encounter played at the SSC ground yesterday.
Soysa, scoring 65 off 70 deliveries with five boundaries and a six, alongside Avinash Fernando, provided a sturdy opening partnership of 75 runs after deciding to bat first. This was complemented by Eheliyagoda’s 61 off 69 balls, featuring eight boundaries, and a crucial 68-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Mahith Perera, propelling them to a total of 256 for 8.
Despite a brief resistance with a 59-run third-wicket partnership between Isuru Geeganage and Anush Polonowita, Royal faltered early, losing two wickets with the score at 18. They found themselves struggling at 128 for 5 in the 31st over.
Shane Abeyratne’s valiant effort with a top score of 56 went in vain as the combination of right-arm spin from Dineth Goonewardena and pace from Nathan Caldera proved lethal, sharing six wickets to dismiss Royal for 226 runs. The Thomians reclaimed the Mustangs Trophy with this victory, marking their 22nd win in the series.
