Vavuniya phase of Milo Football Champs completed

The third phase of the Milo Football Champs 2024 of Northern Province, for the Under-10 and Under-12 age categories, was held in the Vavuniya District last weekend. This phase included a total of 32 teams with seven girls’ teams and 25 boys’ teams competing.

Vavuniya Tamil Madhya Maha Vidyalaya emerged victorious from the boys’ Under-12 segment, alongside Saivapragasa Ladies College, who qualified for the grand final from the girls’ Under-12 category.

Vipulanantha College and Nelukkulam Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalaya emerged victorious in the boys’ Under-10 and girls’ Under-10 segments respectively, as the four teams advanced to the grand finals to be held in Jaffna next weekend.

From last weekend’s event, 13 teams qualified to compete in the highly anticipated final round, scheduled to be held at the Duraiappa Stadium in Jaffna on March 23. Vavuniya Tamil Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Muthaliyarkulam Roman Catholic Tamil Mix School, Aruvithoddam Sivanantha Vidiyalaya and Nelukkulam Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalaya advanced to the final round from the Boys’ Under-12 segment, while from the Girls’ segment of the same age group, Saivapragasa Ladies College, Muthaliyarkulam Roman Catholic Tamil Mix School, Vinayagar Vidyalaya and Moondumurippu Government Tamil Mixed School have booked their berths.

Vipulanantha College, Nelukkulam Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalaya, Muslim Maha Vidyalaya and Moondumurippu Government Tamil Mixed School have made it through to the final round from the Boys’ Under-10 segment along with the only Girls’ team to qualify from the same age group, Nelukkulam Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalaya.

Unleashing the potential of future football stars, the Milo Football Champs programme aims to ignite the sportsmanship skills of aspiring athletes in the Northern Province. Alongside the tournament, a selected group of talented individuals will receive specialised training on weekends over the coming months, guided by seasoned coaches from the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.

With the support of the Ministry of Education, Northern Province Department of Education, and the sponsorship of Nestlé Milo, the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association will manage the facilitation of this programme. Nestlé Milo, in its journey towards fostering grassroots sports in Sri Lanka and championing gender diversity in sports, sponsors this programme with a vision of nourishing the future generations of Sri Lanka.
